A semiconductor optical amplifier is an optical amplifier based on a semiconductor gain medium. It is essentially like a fiber-coupled semiconductor laser tube, the end mirror has been replaced by an AR coating; a tilted waveguide can be used to further reduce the end reflectivity. The signal light is typically transmitted through a semiconductor single-mode waveguide with lateral dimensions of 1-2 μm and a length of about 0.5-2mm. The waveguide mode has significant overlap with the active (amplified) region, which is pumped by the current. The injection current generates a certain carrier density in the conduction band, allowing an optical transition from the conduction band to the valence band. The gain maximum occurs at photon energies slightly above the bandgap energy.

12/13/2023, Optical Fiber Online News, November 20-December 1, 2023, the third plenary session of the 2022-2024 research period of Study Group 15 (SG15) of the International Telecommunication Union Standardization Sector (ITU-T) was held in Geneva, Switzerland. A total of 230 representatives from 17 national members, 38 sector members and 13 sector associate members attended the meeting. A total of nearly 70 experts from 12 member units of the Chinese delegation attended the meeting on the spot and submitted 148 technical proposals, which promoted the deliberation, approval and adoption of 25 standard suggestions and 4 technical supplement documents with Chinese experts as editors. Among the 45 new proposals, china's 32 experts served as editors of 3 new standard recommendations, 18 existing standard recommendations and 6 technical additions.
